The Wilcox Historical Society is guided by a dedicated team of officers and directors who bring expertise, passion, and a deep commitment to preserving the county’s history. Our Board ensures the Society fulfills its mission, oversees preservation projects, and fosters meaningful community engagement.
Lance Britt
President
As President of the Wilcox Historical Society, Lance Britt provides leadership in advancing the Society's mission to preserve, promote, and celebrate the history of Wilcox County. Working alongside fellow board members, volunteers, and community partners, he helps guide preservation initiatives, educational programs, fundraising efforts, and long-term planning to ensure the Society continues to protect the county's historic treasures for generations to come.
Garland Cook Smith
Vice President
Garland Cook Smith brings more than two decades of service to the Wilcox Historical Society, including approximately 25 years as Vice President for Programs. With family roots in Wilcox County reaching back to Alabama’s early statehood, she maintains a deep commitment to preserving the community’s history, historic places, and cultural traditions. As steward of the Sterrett McWilliams House, which has remained in her family since 1870, Garland continues a family legacy of preservation and leadership while supporting the Society’s educational programs, partnerships, and long-term mission.
Mary Margaret Kyser
Treasurer
Mary Margaret Kyser brings decades of experience in education, nonprofit service, and community leadership to the Wilcox Historical Society. A Birmingham native and longtime Montgomery resident, she earned degrees in history, art, and secondary education before building a distinguished career at Montgomery Academy and later serving the Montgomery Area Council on Aging. Since moving to Camden in 2017, she has become actively involved in local historical, arts, church, and service organizations and currently serves as Treasurer of the Society.

Martha Grimes Lampkin
Editor and Social Media Manager
Martha Grimes Lampkin brings deep family roots and a strong commitment to preservation and community service to the Wilcox Historical Society. A graduate of Auburn University with a degree in Finance, she built a career in banking before returning to Wilcox County, where her family has lived since the 1820s. Active with the Society since 2016, Martha served four years as President and now manages its social media and publications. She also supports several local organizations and preservation efforts while continuing her family’s longstanding legacy of service to Wilcox County history.

Jane Shelton Dale
Recording Secretary
Jane Shelton Dale brings decades of service in education, historic preservation, church leadership, and civic engagement to the Wilcox Historical Society. A fifth-generation Wilcox Countian and retired elementary educator, she has been active with the Society since the 1990s, previously serving as Secretary and chairing multiple Tours of Homes. An Erskine College graduate, Jane has also held longstanding leadership roles with her church, Bonclarken Conference Center, and Alabama Girls State, earning recognition for her exceptional commitment to community service.

Mary Glen Grant
Curator
Mary Glen Grant brings a lifelong connection to Wilcox County and more than forty years of experience in education to the Wilcox Historical Society. She resides in her family’s historic House on the Hill, built in 1834, and continues a strong family tradition of preservation and community service. Mary Glen currently serves as Volunteer Coordinator for the Tour of Homes and Curator of the Wilcox Female Institute, where she helps shape educational programs and future public use while sharing the county’s history with new generations.
