Preserving the Places That
Tell Our Story
Across Wilcox County, historic places stand as witnesses to the people, traditions, and moments that shaped this community. The Wilcox Historical Society works to rescue threatened properties, restore their architectural character, and return them to public life with new purpose. Through preservation, these buildings become more than reminders of the past—they become museums, gathering places, educational spaces, and living connections between generations.

OUR MISSION IN ACTION

Raise the Bell
A Historic Landmark, Reimagined

For more than 175 years, the Wilcox Female Institute has stood at the heart of Camden—and at the heart of the Wilcox Historical Society’s own story. Raise the Bell is the campaign to preserve this landmark and transform it for a new generation of public use. Through careful restoration, the Institute will become a vibrant center for history, education, research, exhibitions, lectures, and community gatherings.
This project goes far beyond saving a building. It is about returning one of Wilcox County’s most important places to public life and ensuring its story continues to be seen, studied, shared, and celebrated.

A RESTORATION SUCCESS
Beck-Miller-Bonner
Law Office
EST. 1840
A landmark of Wilcox County’s legal and civic history, the Beck-Miller-Bonner Law Office has stood in downtown Camden since 1840. Its complete restoration is a proud example of what thoughtful preservation—and the Wilcox Historical Society—can accomplish.

From Historic Jail to Living History
Built in 1889, the Old Wilcox County Jail has witnessed generations of Wilcox County history. Now, the Wilcox Historical Society is working to give this landmark a new life—a place where the stories, people, and experiences that shaped Wilcox County can be preserved, shared, and discovered for generations to come.
