About the Tour

The Wilcox Historical Society’s celebrated Tour of Homes returns March 19–20, 2027, inviting visitors to step beyond the front doors of some of Wilcox County’s most remarkable historic homes and places. This year, the Tour makes its way to Pine Apple, a community rich in architecture, history, and the distinctive character of Alabama’s Black Belt.

Held only once every four years in each host community, the Tour of Homes has become one of Wilcox County’s signature traditions, drawing visitors from across the country and beyond. The 2026 Tour welcomed 1,034 ticket holders from 19 states and Norway, continuing the event’s reputation as a destination for those who love historic architecture, preservation, and Southern culture. The Tour has also been recognized four times by Alabama Magazine’s Best of Bama awards for Heritage Tours.

In 2027, guests will discover homes and landmarks dating from the 1840s through the early 1900s, with beautiful architecture, period furnishings, historic businesses, gardens, and stories that illuminate generations of life in Wilcox County. Featured properties will include Greenleaves, the Hawthorne-Dobson Home, Oak Hall, the Melton Hotel, and other special sites throughout Pine Apple—many of which are rarely open to the public.

This year’s Tour weekend will be made even more special by James Farmer, acclaimed Southern designer, author, gardener, and lifestyle expert. Known for his distinctive approach to gracious Southern living and entertaining, Farmer is the author of numerous books celebrating homes, gardens, food, and hospitality. Guests will have opportunities throughout Friday’s special events to hear from and meet Farmer, with select ticket packages including a signed copy of his latest book, Home Again.

The weekend begins Friday, March 19, with special events surrounding Farmer’s visit, followed on Saturday, March 20, by the Tour of Homes and additional experiences throughout Pine Apple. From intimate historic interiors to the stories of the families and communities that shaped them, the weekend offers a chance to experience Wilcox County in a way few visitors ever can.

And every ticket does more than open a historic door. Proceeds from the Tour of Homes support the Wilcox Historical Society’s preservation mission and the restoration and stewardship of Wilcox County’s historic properties, including the ongoing restoration of the Wilcox Female Institute in Camden. By joining us for Tour weekend, guests become part of the work to ensure these irreplaceable places—and the stories they hold—are preserved for generations to come.

Tickets and several special experiences are limited. Advance purchase is strongly encouraged.
