About the Tour
The Wilcox Historical Society invites you to join us for a special October meeting featuring Gordon G. Martin, who will present a program on the American Village in Montevallo.
Mr. Martin has served for 26 years on the Board of Trustees of American Village, including twice as chairman, giving him a unique perspective on its history, mission, and role in educating generations of Alabamians about American history and citizenship. With our nation celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2026, we can think of no better time for this program.
A Birmingham native and graduate of The University of Alabama and its School of Law, Martin currently serves as the inaugural Director of the James C. Kennemer Center for Innovation in the Honors College at The University of Alabama and as an Operating Partner at Redmont Capital. He previously spent 28 years with Alabama Power Company and Southern Company and has held leadership roles with numerous educational, historical, civic, and charitable organizations across Alabama.
Our setting for the afternoon is equally special. Yaupon, also known as the Mathews-Tait-Rutherford Home, was built in the 1840s and is one of Wilcox County’s notable historic residences. Located in the Canton Bend community near Camden, the Neoclassical home is distinguished by its raised brick basement and impressive portico with four fluted Doric columns.
Yaupon is a private residence, and we are grateful for the opportunity to gather in this beautiful historic setting.
Please join us for an afternoon that brings together local history, American history, and the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
